MMI Offers Thanks for Support
Published in The Morning Sun on Tuesday, December 13, 2011

MMI would like to thank our many sponsors for generously sponsoring a page in the 2012 HeARTbeat of MMI calendar. Funds raised through the sale of these calendars will be used to maintain MMI's art programs and allow MMI to increase the number and variety of creative activities available to participants.

During the past year, individuals were given several opportunities to express themselves artistically, including participating in the City of Mt. Pleasant's Festival of Banners and the Chair Affair sponsored by Art Reach. These opportunities allowed individuals to build self-esteem and self-confidence through their participation in the arts.

This years sponsored include Walter B. Hogan, Max & Emily's, Gray's Furniture and Appliances, Simply Engraving, Steve, Barb and Dick Charbeneau, Jean and Chis Spears, Jim and Pat Embrey, Cops & Doughnuts, Charles Kruskamp Construction, Central Rehabilitation Services and Isabella Bank.

Support of the 2012 HeARTbeat of MMI calendar fundraiser is essential in meeting the goal of providing creative opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Calendars are available for $10 each and can be purchased through MMI's art program, please call Andi Christopher at 989-773-6918 or email achristopher@mmionline.com

Mt. Pleasant Woman Gearing Up for Le Tour

Published in The Morning Sun on Thursday, June 09, 2011

Clare Managing Editor

Melissa Lackie is excited but a
bit nervous about what she will
be doing Saturday.

Lackie, 27, of Mt. Pleasant
was gearing up Wednesday
for the Le Tour de Mont
Pleasant business relay race,
practicing at Finch Fieldhouse
at Central Michigan University.

Lackie is thrilled to be biking
in the event, but is slightly
nervous because she has
never competed in a bicycle
race before.

Lackie, who does production work for Mid Michigan Industries, is using a hand bicycle on loan from CMU and will be the anchor for MMI’s team in the business relay, a community event with teams of four from local businesses competing beginning at noon Saturday in downtown Mt. Pleasant.

Businesses entering the race must pay $50, with proceeds being donated to the charity the winning team chooses, MMI Assistant Director of Community Employment Shad Welke, who is also on the MMI team, said.

Welke and Mary Lou Schilling of CMU Recreation were on hand Wednesday to cheer Lackie on as she biked laps in the gymnasium, readying for Saturday’s race, where she is the last person on the MMI relay team and gets to cross the finish line.

Lackie hasn’t owned a bicycle in some time, but she likes CMU’s hand bike so much she’s thinking about getting one for herself.

Wearing red, white and blue biking gloves, lackie easily operated the hand petals, brakes and gear shifter on the bicycle’s seat during her practice session Wednesday.

This weekend marks the first year MMI is participating in the business relay race, Welke said.

When Lackie began practicing Wednesday, Schilling was jogging along side her and had to “kick it into high gear” to keep up.
