MMI Participant Recognition
Jackie Syckle
Clare County

Jackie began at MMI in March of 2009 and is
currently participating in the Transitional
Employment and Community Connections
programs.  During her time with MMI, Jackie
has shown strong leadership skills with her
greatest strength being, advocating for
herself and others.  On a recent trip to our
state capital, Jackie’s self advocating resulted
in a private tour that included the Governor’s office for a group of persons served and MMI staff. Jackie also is working on a goal to develop new training modules along with the help of her Connections Coach and a newspaper article that will be written solely by people served with little assistance from staff.

Brad Hendrick
Gratiot/Montcalm County

Brad started working with MMI in July 2008
on the Montcalm Center for Behavioral Health
Supported Employment Crew and currently
works on the crew.  When Brad first began
his career with MMI, he had limited work
experience and little understanding of work
ethics and the skills required to maintain
employment. He set goals to have good
attendance, to learn all aspects of the janitorial position, and to earn as much money as possible. Throughout his career, Brad has proven that he takes his goals seriously by always doing his best. He has worked hard to overcome his obstacles and has become a better employee, a better problem solver, and a more independent and confident individual.

Melissa Lackie
Isabella County - Overall Winner

Melissa’s endearing personality has served
her well in her career at MMI. She gets along
very well with her co-workers in the Transitional
Employment program in Mt. Pleasant, and has
gained the respect of those she has worked
for, and within the Community Employment
program here at MMI. Melissa always strives
to do her best and frequently challenges her
own limits by trying to outperform her co-workers. Recently, Melissa challenged herself to learn a skill that has been very difficult for her in the past. It always frustrated Melissa that she could not play a bigger part in the assembly of one of our products that requires a great deal of manual dexterity. To overcome this obstacle, she dedicated an entire week to figuring out how she could manipulate the hardware assembly of this product. With the help of her shop coach, Melissa discovered a tool that allowed her to finally master the assembly task that had frustrated her for so long.

Ryan Sobus
Youth Services Achievement Award
In School

Ryan has flourished since becoming involved
in our In-School Youth Services program and
participating in WAVE, PAVE and Leadership
Camp. His teachers and other adults said that
he used to be the “shy and quite kid”, but with
the program, he has “come out of his shell”
and become a leader amongst his fellow
classmates. Ryan is also an active member in the Criminal Justice program at his school, and is presently completing an MMI Work Experience at St. Vincent's de Paul as a product tester. Upon graduation, Ryan plans to enlist in the military and pursue a career in law enforcement.

Anthony Hershberger
Youth Services Achievement Award
Steps to Success

Anthony was nominated for his outstanding
work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles
in order to be successful.  Anthony entered
the program in need of a GED and
employment. Upon diligently earning a GED,
he was placed in a Work Experience. As a
result of Anthony being willing to do just
about any job he was assigned during his Work Experience, he was hired by a company and asked to oversee the new employees when they started.

Billie Cole
Case Management Services Achievement Award Winner

Billie was referred to the Jobs, Employment, and Training (JET) program in March of 2010.  At that time, Billie had just been released from jail and had begun receiving services through the Department of Human Services (DHS). Billie participated in Job Search and Work Experience, as well as completed National Career Readiness testing where she received a Silver Certificate. In May of 2010, she was hired through ADECCO, a staffing agency, for a full time position working 40 plus hours per week at a factory in Montcalm County. Based on her work performance as a temporary worker, Bonnie was hired on by the factory as a full fledged employee.
