On March 14th a delegation of staff and consumers from MMI went to Lansing to meet with Legislators on the pressing issues that organizations like MMI are presently facing.
MMI is a not-for-profit organization that provides jobs and training for people with a wide variety of barriers to employment in Arenac, Iosco, Gladwin, Clare, Isabella and Montcalm counties.
The state association of rehabilitation organizations that MMI is a member of, MARO secures the first floor of the Capitol one day a year so that members have the opportunity to meet with legislators face to face. "This is a magnificent opportunity for MMI," remarked Alan Schilling, MMI President. "This gives us maximum visibility and proximity to lawmaker right where they work."
MMI personally invited eleven legislators, who represent the areas that MMI is a service provider, including Governor Granholm. The delegation had a chance to speak with several legislators and key staff on issues including support for continuation of community rehabilitation programs as well as the WIA reauthorization and Work First funding.
MMI was pleased that the legislators, capitol staff and key administrators took time out of their day to attend this annual event. Schilling stated, "Anytime we can personally advocate for the people we provide services for and assist them in advocating for themselves with our law makers, we will take that opportunity."
