Our History

More Than 50 Years of Creating Opportunity

Mid-Michigan Industries (MMI) was founded in 1972 by a group of parents who shared a common vision: creating meaningful opportunities for their adult children with disabilities. At a time when options for community participation, employment, and independent living were limited, these families believed their loved ones deserved more than simply being cared for—they deserved the opportunity to belong, contribute, and thrive.

What began as a small, building-based activity center soon grew into something much larger. As the needs and aspirations of the people we served evolved, so did MMI. We expanded beyond facility-based services, developing work opportunities, skill-building programs, and community supports that focused on each person's abilities, goals, and potential.

Throughout the decades, MMI has continually adapted to changing needs, emerging best practices, and a growing understanding of what true inclusion means. We embraced the shift from segregated services toward community-based supports that empower individuals to live, work, learn, and participate alongside their neighbors. What started as a local activity program transformed into a regional organization serving individuals and families across Central Michigan.

Today, MMI provides a wide range of services that support youth and adults with disabilities in building independent, meaningful lives. Through employment services, community living supports, skill development, community engagement, benefits counseling, and other person-centered programs, we help individuals pursue their goals and strengthen their connections to the communities they call home.

While much has changed since 1972, the heart of our mission remains the same. We continue to believe that every person deserves the opportunity to make choices, contribute their talents, build meaningful relationships, and live a life filled with purpose and dignity.

Today, MMI serves thousands of individuals and families throughout Central Michigan and remains committed to the vision that inspired our founders more than five decades ago: creating communities where people with disabilities are valued, included, and empowered to live their best lives.
